What To Expect in dTMS Treatment?

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) can improve and even alleviate various mental disorders by stimulating and energizing certain neurons in the brain. Let’s find out what the treatment entails.

Psychotherapy and antidepressant medications aren’t the only avenues of treating mental afflictions like anxiety, depression, addiction, OCD, PTSD and the like. There are certain medical stimulation techniques that have opened the pathway to non-invasive and non-medicative treatments.

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) is one such breakthrough technology and the BrainsWay treatment platform is leading the way as an effective alternative mode of treatment for getting back to a normal and healthy life.

The results speak for themselves. Approximately 1 out of 3 people experience complete remission from their depression and above 50% of the patients have had a drastic reduction in their symptoms. What’s more, the treatment is safe and easy to tolerate without any systemic side effects either. It is performed as an out-patient procedure sans anesthesia. All it takes is 20 minutes in the treatment chair and the patient can get back to work and life immediately.

Many people still wonder what exactly goes on during a dTMS session in the therapist’s office. Let’s find out more:

The patient is seated in a comfortable reclining chair and asked to relax. A soft cap is placed on the head and the patient is given ear plugs to cancel out the noise of the machine.

  • The TMS technician will conduct cortical mapping to determine the exact positions of the cerebral cortex that should be targeted during the treatment.
  • The technician will also map the amount of magnetic stimulation the patient can tolerate to determine the precise dose for the treatment. This motor threshold can be manipulated during the future treatments as and when needed.
  • During the treatment, a helmet housing the electromagnetic coil will be slowly lowered over the patient’s head while carefully locating the coils at the right positions over the scalp. The magnetic pulses are activated and it will be perceived as a repetitive tapping sound and sensation emerging from the helmet.
  • The patient can watch television or listen to music during the course of the treatment. Once the therapy is done, the machine is switched off, the helmet removed and the patient is free to leave immediately.
  • The treatment will be administered daily for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. Subsequent treatments begin directly without the initial mapping. However, it may be repeated a few times to adjust the magnetic energy based on the symptoms and side effects.

This Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatment stimulates the broader and deeper regions of the brain through the magnetic pulses. They work on the relevant brain structures to activate and regulate the neural activity, especially that which controls the mood.

As the brain chemistry slowly gets altered, relief from the symptoms will be visible within a few weeks of treatment. As the symptoms gradually improve, the depression may even go away completely by the end of the treatment.
